Thoughts On A Rainy Tuesday

Retailers love the Christmas shopping season, but Antique Shop owner's thoughts turn to Spring booth vignettes. It’s a damp Tuesday and I’m trying to motivate myself to run errands before the heavy rain starts. So, to delay, I went down the Pinterest rabbit hole and ended up looking at patterns for pincushions, traditional tomato pin cushions. How did the tomato pincushion come about?

During the Victorian Era, it became common practice to give a family a fresh tomato which was placed on a mantle to ward off evil spirits and bring prosperity. Since tomatoes were only available certain seasons the fabric stuffed tomato was born. Made from scraps of red fabric and saw dust, the tomato pincushion became the prized possession of the Lady of the House.

On this gray December day, I’m headed to the fabric outlet to pick up some red fabric, green felt and upholstery thread to make a few. I see a bowl of fabric tomatoes in an old wood bowl in my future decorating plans. I’ll let you know how it turns out.
